Mailbox Audit Concern

$

0

Hi all - I am running Exchange 2010 SP2 with mailbox audit enabled on a few executive mailboxes.

I have one user that appears in my audits a few times a day with an entry for accessing several Executives deleted items and occasionally I will see an entry for Inbox. I am being asked to explain why or how this user would access only deleted items. I can't recreate the audit in my testing...It seems odd to me to only have this entry.

The user in question is a delegate admin and the mailboxes are both defined as linked-mode mailboxes across a sister forest with a trust. When I map one of the VIP mailboxes myself, it fires 10-12 audit events as I would expect... but his audit (2 times daily) entry lists just deleted items.

Here are the PS commands I used to set the auditing on the VIP mailboxes:

  • Set-Mailbox -Identity "VIP User" -AuditEnabled $true
  • Set-Mailbox "VIP User" -AuditEnabled $true -AuditDelegate Update, SoftDelete, HardDelete, SendAs, Create, FolderBind, MoveToDeletedItems, Move, SendOnBehalf
  • Get-Mailbox "Audit test" | Format-List *audit*

I have attached a screenshot of the Audit entry I see in RBAC... again, I cant explain why just this entry is logged. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi Every Body,

We are having a hosted exchange environment. Since we migrated from Exc 2007 to 2010 we are facing issue with OAB. The problem is users accessing emails from outlook anywhere through outlook client unable to see the GAL but can able to see AL. It was working with the Exc 2007. Currently the running server is Exc 2010 SP2 with Rollup 6. Is it the default behaviour or it can be resolved. Please help as this issue become more sensitive.

Mailboxes appears in another Mailbox without adding them in Outlook

Hi All,

Since I have updated my Exchange servers 2010 farm with SP2 - U4 v2, user's mailbox appears in another user's mailbox when I give full right permissions.

Normally, it desappear when I remove full right permissions on the mailbox.

Unfortunately, some Mailboxes do not go away even if full right permissions are removed.

I would like to know how I can clean the mailbox in which many old mailboxes appear without being accessible?

Any Q?

Thanks!

Bluetooth Hands Free Only Policy Setting

Hi,

I'm new to managed mobile device policies and so I'm not sure this is the correct forum for my question.  If not, please point me in right direction.

We have a user with a phone that is receiving the Managed Partly Functional policy.  In that policy the setting for Bluetooth is Hands Free Only.  When the user attempts to enable Bluetooth on the phone it gets automatically disabled almost immediately.  This did not happen prior to the phone receiving the policy.

My theory is that the user has not paired the phone to another device, like one would do to make a hands free call, and that therefore Bluetooth is getting turned off.  I have not yet been able to find out from the customer if the phone has been paired or not, so I have not been able to test this theory.

My question is this; Exactly what does the Hands Free Only setting allow for Bluetooth?  In other words, when does it kick it?

Thanks for any information that you can provide.

Query message track logs time difference between emails sent and received

Hi

We have an intermittent problem with incoming emails being delayed. We have a smart host that sits in front of our Exchange server which shows emails being delivered (to Exchange) a few moments after the send time stamp recorded by the sending mail server. However Exchange is not receiving these emails for at least 2 hours (at least that’s what it’s saying in the logs). I want to query the message tracking logs for any time differences between the send time stamp and the delivered time stamp. Any know how to do this? I’ve been experimenting with Get-MessageTrackingLog but not getting very far.

Thanks

SBS 2011 Exchange 2010 external email conundrum workaround using forwarding

$

Hello,

We plan to install an SBS 2011 server in the next month or so upgrading from an SBS 2003 server. In the last month or so, I have been experimenting with mailboxes on a test server running SBS 2011.

We have a domain name, for example, example.com. The domain name is managed by our office in New York and the mail server is hosted on a VPS server in the States. All mail on this domain goes through this server.

In our office in London, we have several external email addresses that we need to use to receive and send mail from, such asjoe@example.com, office@example.com and info@example.com. In SBS 2003 it is quite straightforward to set up 'dummy' mailboxes which can be used to download email to (POP3) and to send email from. The mailboxes are just users in AD. In the properties of the user/mailbox the following settings were enabled: Exchange Advanced - Mailbox Right - Full mailbox access and Security - Send AS for the appropriate users. It is then a straighforward matter to set up the POP3 Connectors in Exchange Management Console and to configure the email accounts in Outlook 2003.

Unfortunately in SBS 2011 and Exchange 2010 there doesn't appear to be the versatility as in SBS 2003. I have encountered all sorts of problems trying to replicate the email setup on the test SBS 2011 server. The only way around which is close to our current setup is to use 'Forwarding' in Exchange 2010.

This was the procedure if anyone is interested:

Setting up External Emails

Receiving:

1. in EMC - OC - Hub Transport - Remote Domains - create the new domain, such as 'example.com'.

2. In SBS 2011 Console create a new user/mailbox for the external email address (such asjoe@example.com, which is the mailbox for receiving and sending email), and set up as a 'Standard User'.

3. Then go to EMC and configure the mailbox for receiving and sending email -  EMC - RC - Mailbox. Check that the user mailbox is displayed - select 'Properties' - Email Addresses tab - Add the External Email address, uncheck 'Automatically update e-mail addresses based on e-mail address policy', click on 'Apply' and then set the External email address as the 'Set as Reply'. Click on OK. Click on 'Mail Flow Settings' tab - Delivery Options - 'Send on Behalf of' select the users who need to use this mailbox to send emails from - click on OK.

4. Then set up a 'Forwarding' mailbox that will act as the internal email mailbox that the external emails will be delivered to. In SBS 2011 Console create a 'Forwarding' new user/mailbox, for example 'ForwardingJoe' and set up as a 'Standard User'. Then go to EMC - RC - Mailbox. Check that the 'Forwarding' user mailbox is displayed - select 'Properties' - Email Addresses tab - Accept the default email address which in this example will be 'ForwardingJoe@the internet domain name' that you registered when setting up the SBS 2011 server for an 'internet presence'.

5. Then select the External mailbox (as in 3. above) Properties - Mail Flow Settings - Delivery Options - Forwarding Address - check 'Forward to' - then browse to the 'Forwarding' mailbox (as in 4. above) that the external emails will be forwarded to. At the same time select the 'Users' that you need to Grant Permissions to 'Send on Behalf of'. Click on OK. Click on OK.

6. The to finish the configuration in EMC - RC - Mailbox highlight the 'Forwarding' mailbox - right click and select 'Manage Full Access Permissions' and once again select the users that will require these permissions which will no doubt be the same users as in 5. above.

6. Lastly, go to the SBS 2011 Console and set up the POP3 connector and remember to select in 'Windows Small Business Server e-mail account' the Forwarding mailbox that the external email address corresponds to.

7. Set up the 'Forwarding' mailbox accounts in Outlook.

A little long-winded but it seems to work well on the test server.

I would be grateful to hear from anyone who is more experienced in Exchange 2010 and perhaps has reservations about this scenario,as I would like to go live with it in a production environment in August.

Many thanks,
Mark

Sorry for this noob question...

I have domain *.contoso.com shared between serverA.domain.local and serverB.newdomain.local on 2 Exchange 2010 servers.

On serverA.domain.local I set up an internal send connector for *.contoso.com to smarthost serverB.newdomain.local however for a mailbox that was moved earlier I get a failed routing error in the logs.

How do I resolve this please?

Understanding Expected Free/Busy Behavior with Federated Trust and Organizational Relationship

$

Hi there,

I’m working on a project to share free/busy information of Resource Mailboxes between two separate organizations.  The end goal is allow users from Organization B to use the resource scheduler in Outlook to view information for Meeting Rooms in Organization A.

Both Organizations are running Exchange 2010 (one is SP2 and the other is SP3).

After sifting through a slew of things found in different places on the Internet, I’ve done the following per what’s outlined here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd335198.aspx

1) Created a Federated Trust on each Exchange Server with the Microsoft Federation Gateway.

2) Created DNS TXT records (e.g. domaina.com & domainb.com) with the “domain proof” string in both respective forward lookup zones.

3) Configured “Manage Federation” on each Exchange Server with the domains to be managed respectively.

4) Created an Organizational Relationship with the external domain (Organization B) on the Exchange Server in Organization A with both Sharing and Calendar enabled.

5) Created a Sharing Policy on Exchange in Organization A for the external organization (Organization B) allowing all actions.

6)  Specified the Meeting Room Mailboxes in the Sharing Policy created above.

Here’s what I can/can’t do, and I’m frankly not sure what the expected behavior is:

1) As an Org B user, I cannot see meeting rooms in Org A using Outlook (not in GAL).

2) As an Org B user, I can type in a meeting room’s address in Outlook’s Scheduling Assistant, but I cannot see free/busy.

One thing that I’ve noticed that is strange is that I get a repeating error in the eventlog on both Exchange servers telling me that the certificate for the Federation is expired.

After recreating these trusts more than once (and deleting the old certs), it seems that the wizard creates a cert with an expiration immediate expiration date.

Another thing that I’ve read—but this dates back to articles in 2011—is that “You must use a domain other than your primary SMTP domain (used to receive email) for the account namespace… The current recommendation is to use exchangedelegation.domain.com as the account namespace.”  It says that this is documented here, but I can’t find any further mention of that stipulation.

It’s obvious that I’m missing a step or two to get this working, and I’m not actually sure what “working” will mean at this point.  I’m not sure that I won’t need to use Forefront Identity Manager at some point going forward or not.

Any help and/or direction on this would be most appreciated.

Thanks mucho,

Kim

SP2 Installation Error but Succesfull - WEIRD!

Hi Everyone,

Am finding Exchange 2010 SP2 funny, have been in the process of moving my exchange services from AD server but i haven't managed to date due to the error even after raising the issue here

I had tried upgrading from RTM to SP2 i still had the error below, now i have set up a another new Server 2008 R2 SP1 and tried installing SP2 setup but i get the error on the mailbox role.

The weird thing is that after the installation i have tried creating a mailbox on the new exchange server and moved my mailbox there and it working just fine. Whats with the error and it seems the mailbox role has already been installed. When i run the SP2 setup again, the MB role is ticked (to mean ready to install) and the CA & HT are grayed out (to mean already installed) am now confused with the whole thing.

  1. Can this error be ignored?
  2. Is it safe if i move all my mailboxes to this server and uninstall exchange on the AD server?
  3. Give some some more highlights so that i don't land into more issues with this.

Public folder replication after Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 migration

$

Hi,

I am troubleshooting Public Folder replication between an Exchange 2003 server and a Exchange 2010 SP3 server that was recently added to the network.

There does not appear to be any PF replication between the two servers, even though, before the mailbox migration I tested and made sure that test public folders updated between the two servers with content updating after being added from either server.

However, since the mailbox migration, nothing has replicated.

I have performed the troubleshooting steps detailed in http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2006/01/17/public-folder-replication-troubleshooting-part-1-troubleshooting-the-replication-of-new-changes.aspx and everything seems to be in order.

When logging is enabled, I can see plenty of messages outbound from the 2003 server, but no replies. However, I can see that the messages are received by the 2010 server through the SMTP logs and Pipeline Tracing and through message tracking I can see that they were delivered to the store! However, there is no hierarchy updates and no content of any type in the 2010 Public folders.

Has anybody seen this before or have any more steps I can try?

Thanks,

Emmett

Calendar Access Permissions

I am working to provide calendar access for some users to another user.

I added

Add-MailboxFolderPermission -Identity ‘User1:\Calendar’ -User ‘User2’ -AccessRights Reviewer ,

User2 can see User1 's calendar. But In scheduling assistant he only gets to see free/busy status as blue block for User1. Is there a parameter we can add to this command so that we see details like subject also.
